For a teacher, teaching philosophy is important as our reasons for teaching, a description of how we teach and the justifications for our beliefs about teaching. I would like to share with everyone my teaching philosophy.
I think a good teacher is professional. To me, professional means to have self-confidence, showing strong leadership and to have good interpersonal skills and communication skill. Besides, I need to have excellent knowledge because a teacher should be resourceful and a few steps ahead the students. A good teacher should also respect her students because I think if we want others to respect us, we have to respect them first.
I also wish to build a strong rapport with my students. To earn their trusts, I need to learn to trust and understand them first. I also have to be up-to-date with the latest information and technology. To be updated not only help me to be closer to my students but I could also incorporate the ICT into my classroom practice. Besides that, I have to be well-prepared for every lesson so that I can manage my time and ensure the lesson goes well. I will regard my students as my main priority and attend to their academic and personal needs whenever they need me.
I believe every student is unique so I encourage freestyle learning because each student has different potential and learning style. So, my job is to promote the growth of the students by creating a fun and relaxed learning environment where every student can learn. I also hope to motivate my students to learn not by forcing them. This is because forcing only makes them learn temporarily for exams while motivation will promote lifelong learning.
Besides that, I prefer student-centered teaching where students take charge of their own learning with little assistance from the teacher. This can be done by using inquiry based teaching method where students are required to search and discover the knowledge by themselves. I want them to be independent and able to explore every opportunity to utilize the resources around them. My role is to facilitate them throughout the process. I think students will learn more by this way. I will also try to relate what the students learn in class to the real life situations so that they will be able to apply what they learn.
Last but not least, I encourage my students to be critical and creative thinking. In my class, I will give them the freedom to voice out their ideas. I’m open-minded and willing to accept new ideas and critics because I think the students opinions are the reflections of my lessons. Through their opinions, I will learn about my weakness and is able to improve for the better.
